In the early Edo era , the futamono , a container with a lid , was invented to keep food warm.
Initially , it was a single box , and later , in the mid Edo era (about 1700~), the dan-ju, which was a multi-layer set of boxes with a cover on the top box , came into use.
Also , it was conveniently used for sweets , delicacies and condiments other than dishes , as well as for cosmetics for women or for small accessories and articles.
