民具とは、人々の暮らしになくてはならない生活用具のことです。
その種類は多種多様で、家具類や布団、日々の食事に使用する什器類、陶磁器の食器、魚や野菜を入れたかごなどがあります。その中でも木製の品や竹などで作られたかご類、または燈台や火入れなどの鉄器類をこちらに集めています。
民具は、民衆の暮らしから生まれた「用の美」と考えられています。美のための美ではなく、人々の用を第一に考え、ものづくりをする世界。それらは、先人の知恵によって受け継がれ結集して作り続けられており、一個人の力ではなく、多数の人々の協力によって、より使いやすく、より長持ちするように作られ続けてきました。使う人を第一に考え作られた品々、それを長く大切に使い続けた品々、そこには深い愛が宿っており、そこにこそ驚くべき美しさをもったものが見られます。
